What an e-commerce website needs to do well
An e-commerce website is an online store where customers browse products, add them to a cart and pay, while you manage products, stock and orders from a dashboard. The design matters, but sales depend more on practical things: clear product information, trust at checkout, payment options customers already use and delivery details they can rely on.
Before building, we work through how you'll actually run the store: how many products, who adds them, how orders reach you, how shipping is charged and what happens with returns. Getting those answers right avoids a store that looks finished but is painful to operate.
- Platforms
- WooCommerce (WordPress) or Shopify, chosen to suit your store
- Payments
- Integration with a payment gateway you choose, such as Razorpay, PayU or Cashfree, plus cash on delivery if you offer it
- Shipping
- Rates by location, weight or order value; courier integration where available
- You manage
- Products, prices, stock, orders, coupons and customers
- Not included
- Gateway and courier account fees, which are paid directly to those providers
Why online stores lose sales
Product pages don't answer questions
Our approach: structured product details: size, material, delivery time, returns and clear photos.
Checkout asks for too much
Our approach: a short checkout with guest ordering, autofill-friendly fields and visible costs.
Shipping costs appear at the last step
Our approach: shipping rules explained early on product and cart pages.
The store is slow on mobile
Our approach: optimised product images, caching and a lightweight theme.

WooCommerce or Shopify?
Both are solid choices. The better one depends on how you want to run your store.
| WooCommerce | Shopify | |
|---|---|---|
| What it is | A free WordPress plugin on your own hosting | A hosted store platform with a monthly plan |
| Running costs | Hosting, any premium extensions, maintenance | Monthly subscription, apps, transaction-related fees depending on plan |
| Flexibility | Very flexible; you control the code and data | Flexible within Shopify's system and app store |
| Maintenance | You or a maintenance plan handles updates | Shopify handles hosting and core updates |
| Good fit | Stores that also need strong content, or custom rules | Product-first stores that want less technical upkeep |

E-commerce website questions
How much does an e-commerce website cost in India?
It varies with the number of products, features and platform. Hostinger India's 2026 cost guide (updated February 2026) puts agency-built e-commerce sites at roughly ₹1,50,000 to ₹4,00,000 or more, while smaller freelancer-built WooCommerce stores can cost less. We quote against your actual product count and features. See our cost guide.
Which payment gateways can you integrate?
Most Indian gateways that offer a WooCommerce plugin or Shopify integration, such as Razorpay, PayU and Cashfree. You open the merchant account in your business name, and we connect and test it.
Can I add and edit products myself?
Yes. Both WooCommerce and Shopify let you manage products, prices, stock and orders from a dashboard. We show you how at handover.
Can you add cash on delivery?
Yes. Cash on delivery can be enabled, limited by order value or location if you want to reduce risk.
Do you upload the products?
We can. Product entry is quoted separately based on the number of products and whether data and photos are ready. Large catalogues can often be imported from a spreadsheet.
